Manitoba Hydro
Launch site
Founded in 1961, Manitoba Hydro is a provincial Crown corporation and one of the largest integrated electricity and natural gas distribution utilities in Canada. We provide safe, reliable and affordable electricity to 624,000 customers across Manitoba and natural gas to over 298,000 customers in 135 communities.
Nearly all of the electricity we produce is generated at 16 hydroelectric generating stations on the Nelson, Winnipeg, Saskatchewan, Burntwood and Laurie rivers. The province's remaining electricity needs are met by one thermal generating station, four remote diesel generating stations, and wind power purchases from independent wind farms in Manitoba.
We also trade electricity within four wholesale markets in the midwestern United States and Canada. Manitoba Hydro provides service to four remote communities in northern Manitoba from diesel generation located in or near the communities. The four communities are: Shamattawa, Tadoule Lake, Brochet and Lac Brochet. The Corporation serves approximately 831 customers in these communities. Most are Residential, but there are also General Service customers and Government customers (Federal and Provincial) and First Nation Education accounts.
